Best wide-angle lens for landscape photography on Fujifilm X-H2?

I recently upgraded to the Fujifilm X-H2 and I’m absolutely blown away by the 40MP sensor, but I feel like my current glass isn't fully capturing the detail I need for landscapes. I’m looking for a wide-angle lens that can really resolve that high resolution, especially for shots with fine textures like rock faces or distant treelines. I’ve been debating between the versatility of the XF 10-24mm f/4 R WR and the sheer sharpness of the XF 8-16mm f/2.8, though the weight of the latter is a bit intimidating for long hikes. Is the 10-24mm sharp enough for the new sensor, or should I be looking at a prime like the XF 18mm f/1.4 instead?

For your situation, I'd suggest the Fujifilm XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR hands down. Ngl, that 40MP sensor is basically a lens stress test lol. I've shot landscapes for 10+ years and the older Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 R WR just cant keep up with those fine treelines. The Fujifilm XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR is insanely sharp but such a beast to carry. The 18mm is pure magic tho!

shd_qhor is spot on about the tripod thing, but i might want to offer a slightly different take... honestly everyone is so obsessed with sharpness lately but i'd be careful about prioritizing that over sheer reliability. If you're trekking out into the wild, a lens that might fail or let in moisture is a way bigger headache than slightly softer corners. I've had 'sharp' glass fail me in the field before and it really ruins the trip. Maybe look into some of those rugged third-party primes instead? Just make sure they have a proper gasket at the mount. A dead lens on a 40MP body is basically just a very expensive paperweight, ngl.

I've spent quite a bit of time analyzing the technical output of different lenses on my X-H2, and honestly, the results have been pretty disappointing considering the cost of some of this glass. I initially bought the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 R WR, but the resolving power just wasn't as good as expected for a 40MP sensor. When you're trying to capture fine textures, the corner softness on that lens is very noticeable, especially at the 10mm end. I've been trying to find more budget-friendly alternatives that can actually handle the high resolution. I recently tested the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary since it's much cheaper than the Fuji zooms, but unfortunately, I had issues with significant barrel distortion and some annoying chromatic aberration on high-contrast edges. If you're looking to save money, I’d actually recommend hunting for a used Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS. I've owned one for years and it's surprisingly sharp if you stop it down to f/5.6 or f/8. It's a manual lens, but for the price, it actually out-resolves some of the more expensive zooms I've tested.

If youre worried about that 40mp sensor, I've been really happy with the Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 XF. It has zero complaints from me and the sharpness is honestly better than some of my first-party primes.

  • Way more affordable than the 8-16mm
  • Built like a tank
  • Resolves those fine treelines nicely Actually just finished 3d printing a custom thumb rest for my X-H2 because the official ones felt too flimsy. Took me like four iterations to get the clearance right for the dials, but man, it makes a huge difference in how the camera sits in my hand when im using heavier glass. Spent half the day yesterday troubleshooting my printer bed leveling tho... anyway, definitely look at the 13mm if you want sharpness without the bulk.

Curious about one thing: u shooting handheld or tripod? - Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 R WR is kinda soft for 40MP.
- Fujifilm XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR resolves better tho.
