So I finally picked up a used X-T4 because I want to get more into street photography, especially since Im planning a trip to Tokyo in about three weeks and really want to capture the vibe there properly. I've been doing a lot of reading and everyone seems to point towards the 23mm f2 or the 35mm f2. I like that they're small and weather sealed which is a huge plus since I'm kinda clumsy and it might rain.
I read that the 23mm is the gold standard for street because of that 35mm equivalent field of view but then I see other people saying it's too wide and you have to get awkwardly close to strangers to get a good shot. That makes me a bit nervous honestly. On the other hand the 35mm f2 seems great for subject separation but I'm worried it might feel too tight when I'm walking through narrow alleys or crowded markets. My budget is capped at like $450 for a used copy so I can really only pick one for now. I'm just torn between the wider storytelling look and the tighter more candid look of the 50mm equivalent.
If you had to pick just one prime for a first-timer doing street in a super busy city, which one would you actually go with?
I agree the 35mm lens is a safer choice for maintaining distance. I'm very satisfied with its performance.
- reliable focus
- weather sealing It works well.
