Im super hyped to finally get a dedicated wide lens for my X-T4 before my trip to Tokyo next month. Street photography is my main thing and I really want that immersive look. Im currently torn between the Fuji 16mm f/1.4 and the Viltrox 13mm f/1.4. The Fuji glass looks legendary but that Viltrox is way cheaper and seems to get decent reviews for the price, which is nice since I have about 800 bucks to burn total. Is the extra width on the 13mm worth sacrificing the build quality of the prime Fuji lens, or should I just suck it up and pay the premium for the weather sealing?

Regarding what #2 said about the 14mm, it is a killer lens but you lose that nice f/1.4 aperture for low light. Before you drop all your cash, what are you planning on shooting mostly? Like, are you aiming for big architecture shots or more candid people stuff? In my experience, 16mm is a sweet spot for street. If you dont mind buying used, you can easily find a Fujifilm XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR within your 800 dollar budget. Honestly, getting that weather sealing is a life saver in Tokyo if you get caught in the rain or humidity. Here is what I would do with your budget:

  • Check out the used market on sites like MPB or KEH to snag the Fuji 16mm prime.
  • If you really want that super wide feel for cheap, maybe grab the Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS manual focus lens.
  • Save the leftover cash for an extra Fujifilm NP-W235 Lithium-Ion Battery or a good neck strap because Tokyo street walking is brutal on gear. Going with the Fuji glass gives you that premium feel and the WR, which honestly is worth the premium when youre traveling. You really dont want to be stressing about your gear when you should be focused on the shot. Let me know what your vibe is, I might have some other ideas.

TL;DR: If you want that classic look without the risk, dont overthink the gear. Grab the Fujifilm XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR and just enjoy your trip. Coming back to this after reading the other replies. Everyone is debating specs, but honestly, for Tokyo? Its all about the experience. I spent a month there a few years ago and brought a bag full of glass, but the Fujifilm XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR was literally glued to my body the entire time. That weather sealing is not just marketing fluff, especially when you get caught in those sudden Tokyo downpours. Youll be running for cover, putting your camera in a bag, and you wont have to worry if it gets splashed or damp. The 16mm focal length is just magic for street shots because it keeps things natural without getting that weird distortion you sometimes get wider than 14mm. It renders skin tones and low-light neon signs so much better than third-party stuff ive tried. Sure, the Viltrox is a deal, but Fuji glass just has this character that makes post-processing way faster. You dont wanna spend your Tokyo nights editing away purple fringing when you could be eating ramen! Trust your gut, pay for the peace of mind, and just get out there and shoot. Its an amazing city, just dont obsess over the gear list too much.

^ This. Also, if you want reliability for Tokyo, check out the Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R. It is super sharp, compact, and feels much safer than third-party options.

Honestly, grab the Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 X-Mount and dont look back. I used to be a total glass snob, but over the years ive realized that for street stuff, the extra width is a game changer in tight city spaces like Tokyo. The viltrox is surprisingly sharp and that f/1.4 aperture is killer for those moody evening shots. Here is why id save the cash:

  • 13mm gives you way more breathing room than 16mm in crowded alleys
  • The autofocus is actually snappy enough for street work
  • You have money left over for other gear If you really crave that weather sealing, just bring a cheap cover for the camera when it rains. Dont stress the Fuji premium, just get out there and shoot.
