I just swapped my X-T3 for an X-Pro3 and honestly Im kind of panicking because I leave for a 2-week trip to Tokyo in exactly nine days and I still havent settled on a main prime lens for street work. I thought Id just use my old 16-55mm but that thing is a total brick and it blocks like half the optical viewfinder which totally defeats the purpose of buying a rangefinder style body in the first place right? So I sold the zoom and now I have about 600 bucks to spend on one solid prime that I can just leave on the camera the whole time.
My logic was to go for the 23mm f2 because its small and fast and weather sealed which is great since its supposed to rain while Im there but then I started reading about how the frame lines for the 23mm are right on the edge of the OVF and it might be annoying to compose with if you wear glasses like I do. Then I looked at the 35mm f1.4 because everyone raves about the rendering and the soul of that lens but is it too slow for quick street snaps? Ive been shooting for like ten years so I know how to zone focus and all that but the X-Pro3s specific magnification is throwing me for a loop.
I was thinking maybe the 27mm pancake might be the play for maximum stealth but the lack of an aperture ring on the old one is a dealbreaker and the new one is sold out everywhere near me. If I go with the 23mm f1.4 is it gonna be too chunky and block the view? I really want that immersive experience where I can see outside the frame but I dont want a massive lens hood sticking into my line of sight every time I try to line up a shot in Shinjuku. Its such a weird specific problem to have but the OVF is the whole reason I bought this thing. Should I just stick to the f2 fujicrons for the size or is the image quality jump to the f1.4 stuff worth the extra bulk and viewfinder blockage? I need to pull the trigger tonight so I can get it delivered before my flight...
I spent a month wandering Shinjuku with an X-Pro body and learned the hard way about those frame lines. Since you wear glasses, the 23mm is a total guess-and-pray situation with the OVF because you are constantly smashing your face against the glass just to see the edges. It gets annoying fast.
- I would suggest the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm f2 R WR. It balances perfectly and barely cuts into your view.
- Be careful with the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm f1.4 R. I love the look, but the autofocus is slower and that motor is noisy in quiet spots.
- Make sure to avoid the f1.4 primes if OVF blockage is your main worry. They are way too chunky for that rangefinder experience. The weather sealing on the f2 line actually saved my camera during a massive downpour in Shibuya... definitely dont skip it.
