Can someone please recommend some decent third-party lenses for L-mount that wont break the bank? Honestly Im getting so fed up with Panasonic's official glass prices right now, I need something for a paid portrait gig coming up in three weeks and I just cant justify dropping two grand on a single prime lens living here in Chicago. My total budget is around 500 bucks max. Is sigma or tamron actually worth it or should I just look at manual focus vintage stuff at this point... what are you guys using?
- Check out the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 L because autofocus tracking on L-mount can be tricky with third-party glass. I learned this the hard way on a freezing Chicago winter shoot last year when my adapted setup kept hunting for focus in low light.
- The native L-mount version gives you proper electronic communication with the body, which matters a lot when you are shooting wide open at f 1.4 for portrait sessions. You dont want soft eyes because of protocol translation lag.
- Watch out for weather sealing limits too. When I was shooting outside near the lake, dust got into my older manual setup because tolerances just arent what you get with modern weather-resistant barrels.
- Stick to native mounts if you have a paid gig coming up so you dont risk missing critical shots while troubleshooting connection drops.
In my experience, grab a Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN Contemporary for around five hundred bucks. Autofocus is lightning fast and totally reliable for paid gigs!
Re: "In my experience, grab a Sigma 35mm F2..." - totally agree on that build quality, but for portraits you might want more compression. I would suggest looking at the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE adapted or natively if available, or stick to the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art if you can stretch slightly, though vintage is risky for paid work due to miss rates. Make sure to check aperture blades and motor specs before buying anything cheap.
