I'm looking to get into astrophotography with my new Panasonic S5 II. What would be the best L-mount lens to use for capturing the night sky? I'd like something wide and fast. Budget is flexible for the right lens. Thanks for any recommendations!

Get the new released Sigma 15mm f/1.4 Fisheye DG DN Art Lens, it is Optimized for Astrophotography.

Like someone mentioned, the Sigma Art series is definitely the peak for this mount, but those ultra-wide f/1.4 lenses are a massive investment. I've been very satisfied with the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for my astro work. It's a bit more cost-effective and specifically designed with astrophotographers in mind, including that handy manual focus lock switch. If you're looking for something even lighter on the wallet, the Panasonic Lumix S 18mm f/1.8 works well too. It isn't quite as fast as the Sigma Art line, but it's compact and very sharp. I have no complaints about the coma control on this one for the price. It's a practical way to get started without blowing the whole budget on one lens... leaves more room for a good tripod or maybe a tracker later on.

When it comes to astrophotography using L-mount cameras like Panasonic S5 IIĀ , several lenses are particularly well-suited for this purpose. Below are some of the best options:

  1. Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art:

    • This ultra-wide angle lens has a fast f/1.8 aperture, making it excellent for capturing star fields and minimizing star trails during long exposures.
  2. Panasonic Lumix S Pro 16-35mm f/4:

    • This lens offers versatility with a zoom range that covers wide-angle shots. While it has a narrower aperture of f/4, it still performs well for landscapes and astrophotography, especially when combined with longer exposures.
  3. Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG DN HSM Art:

    • This prime lens provides an excellent combination of sharpness, low distortion, and a fast f/1.4 aperture, making it a favorite for capturing detailed astrophotographic images.

Another great lens is Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens, which is also designed for astrophotographers.

When considering the best L-mount lenses for astrophotography, in my opinion, Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f/2.8Ā - A versatile zoom lens with a constant aperture, perfect for a range of astrophotography styles, from wide landscapes to close-up details.Ā
