Ive been shooting L-mount since the S1 came out, so I definitely know my way around the system but lately Ive been feeling really stuck with my glass. I usually just rock the 24-105mm but the sharpness just isnt cutting it for me anymore, especially when I'm shooting wide open in lower light. My kit bag feels like a mess right now and I have a destination wedding coming up in about six weeks in Italy where I really dont want to be swapping lenses constantly. I'm honestly getting kind of anxious about it because I need something reliable that wont fail me.
Here is what I need:
- constant aperture is a must, f/2.8 or better
- versatile zoom range because I cant carry a whole bag of primes
- budget is around 2k but I can stretch a bit if it means I never have to buy another lens again
- needs to handle decent bokeh for portraits without being too heavy for all-day use
Is there anything that actually beats the standard zooms without being a total brick to carry around all day? Ive looked at the Sigma 24-70mm DG DN II but Im worried about the edge softness reports. What are you guys actually using for weddings?
Honestly, just grab the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 24-70mm f/2.8. It is built like a tank and sharper than anything else I have used over the years.
Had a moment to think about this more while reviewing some of my Italy trip photos. Honestly, if you hate swapping lenses, you have to look at the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary. It is way lighter than the big pro zooms and perfect for all-day carrying. I was worried about the missing 4mm on the wide end but it never mattered. Another option is the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. It is a bit pricier and the aperture isnt constant, but the build quality is just insane for weddings. If you really need that f/2.8 zoom, check these out:
- Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art has been my workhorse lately, the focus speed is snappy.
- The older Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is still a solid bargain if you find it used. Honestly, the weight difference makes such a huge impact when you're shooting for eight hours straight. Good luck with the wedding.
