So Ive been stuck in this rabbit hole for weeks now trying to pick just one prime for my S5II. Im heading to Tokyo in about three weeks and I really want to keep my kit minimal so Im only bringing one lens. My budget is around $800 tops which is making this tough because I keep going back and forth between the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art and the Panasonic 50mm f/1.8.

The Sigma looks like it has that magic rendering but its also a literal brick and might be a pain to carry all day in Shinjuku. Then there is the 50mm which is super light and cheap but I wonder if it feels too tight for street shots sometimes? I also saw some people raving about the Sigma 65mm f/2 i-series for the build quality and portraits but that seems like it would be a nightmare in crowded alleys. I really need something that can do decent portraits of my wife without making her face look weird but still capture the vibe of the city. Does the 35mm feel too wide for street portraits or is it the sweet spot? I just cant decide if I should go for the 35mm and stretch my budget or just play it safe with the 50mm and save the weight...

I would suggest the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8. I once hauled heavy glass through Tokyo and it sucked. This stays under budget and the 0.14x magnification is decent for close-up street details.
