Im looking for a solid portrait lens for my D750 but Im kinda stuck. I keep seeing the 85mm 1.8G mentioned everywhere but some folks say the Tamron 85mm is sharper for the price. Budget is around 300-400 bucks max, need it by next month for a family shoot in Seattle. What do you think?
To add to the point above: if you want a different look, I had a great time using the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM on my old D700. It is a bit older but the bokeh is super creamy and it fits nicely in that price range if you find a used one. Honestly, it makes portraits pop way more than the f/1.8 versions. Just make sure to test the focus consistency before your shoot.
Building on the earlier suggestions, honestly look at the Tamron SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD. People bash it sometimes but the vibration control is a game changer for low light family shots. Since you're shooting in Seattle, that extra stability helps a ton if it gets cloudy or dark. It feels way more premium than the Nikon plastic too. Definitely grab a used copy if you can find one near your budget.
Honestly, skip the Tamron. Had issues with focus accuracy and it was disappointing. Stick with the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G. It is reliable and fits your budget perfectly.
