I'm shooting my first wedding with my new Nikon Z6ii mirrorless camera. Any recommendations on the best Z-mount lenses to use for wedding photography? Looking for a versatile kit that can handle portraits, groups, candids and low light.

When it comes to capturing weddings with Nikon Z series cameras, choosing the right lenses is crucial for achieving beautiful, high-quality images. Here are three of the best-selling lenses that are highly regarded for wedding photography:

  1. Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S:

    • This versatile zoom lens is a favorite among wedding photographers due to its flexibility and exceptional image quality. The f/2.8 aperture allows for great low-light performance and beautiful background blur, making it ideal for both candid shots and portraiture. The range from 24mm to 70mm covers wide-angle shots of the venue and details, as well as tighter portraits.
  2. Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S:

    • A prime lens that offers excellent sharpness, this 50mm lens is perfect for portrait work and low-light conditions. The f/1.8 aperture provides beautiful bokeh and isolates subjects effectively, making it a great choice for capturing intimate moments during weddings. Its compact size also makes it easy to carry around throughout the day.
  3. Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 S:

    • Known for its flattering compression and excellent sharpness, this lens is ideal for portraiture, making it a go-to for capturing the couple, bridal party, and other emotional moments. The f/1.8 aperture allows for stunning background separation and works well in various lighting conditions, which is crucial during wedding ceremonies.

The Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S and Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S lenses form the perfect full-frame zoom kit for wedding photography with the Z mirrorless system. Their fast, constant f/2.8 aperture captures crisp shots in low light while providing ideal background blur for portraits. Combined, they cover the ideal range from wide angle to telephoto. To complete the trio, the compact, affordable Z 50mm f/1.8 S prime lens adds intimate portraits, dreamy bokeh and dimly-lit candid potential. Together, these three lenses offer tremendous image quality, low light ability and versatility to shoot an entire wedding with ease. Coming back to this after thinking it over... honestly I'm kinda disappointed nobody mentioned the ergonomics or reliability concerns yet. I've had issues with some of these setups being way too heavy for a long day or just not as fast to focus in dark receptions as I'd expected. It really sucks when you miss a shot because of gear hunting... anyway I want to help you get this right but need a bit more info:

  • What is your total budget for these lenses?
  • Are you planning to carry two bodies or just swap lenses on the one Z6ii? Losing a shot because you're fumbling with a lens swap is the worst feeling, so knowing your workflow will help a lot. Just want to make sure you're actually prepared for the reality of a 10 hour day.
