I recently got a Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and am looking for advice on the best lens for shooting my kids' soccer games and track meets. I'd like something with good reach to capture the action from the sidelines. Any recommendations from fellow sports parents and photographers? Thanks!
^ This. Also, you really gotta be careful with how everything actually syncs up when you're on the sidelines. I'm late to the party but it reminds me of when my cousin tried to bring out a bunch of different bits and pieces for his kids track meet and it turned into a whole ordeal because nothing wanted to talk to each other correctly on his Nikon Z8.
- the adapter he used was acting super glitchy
- focus was hunting every time a runner went by
- his battery just drained in like twenty minutes for no reason I would suggest making sure to test every single setting before the whistle blows. Ngl, he was so frustrated that he almost threw the whole rig in the grass... it was just a mess of compatibility errors and slow wake-up times. You might want to consider how much stress that adds when you just wanna see your kid play instead of looking at a screen. Just be careful with the firmware too, honestly, cause that caused him so many headaches that day and he didnt get a single usable shot. It was such a bummer... just something to keep in mind while you're looking.

I will choose the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 VR S.
Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S is one of the best choice.
Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.
I also recommended the Nikkor Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S. With the zoom range from 100mm to 400mm, you have lots of flexibility for framing shots from various distances, whether on a soccer field or ball diamond. The aperture is reasonably fast and the 5.5 stops of vibration reduction helps keep shots sharp when zoomed in. Autofocus is very quick and accurate. While not as bright as an zoom, it's also more affordable and covers a very useful zoom range for outdoor sports.
