So I finally caved and bought a used Nikon D3500 off Facebook Marketplace because I really want to start taking better photos of my golden retriever, Cooper. He moves so fast and my phone just cant keep up with him, honestly it just turns into a blurry mess every time. The camera came with the kit lens which is fine I guess but I feel like I have to get super close to him to get a decent shot and then he just runs at me.
Im totally lost when it comes to lenses though. I see people talking about prime vs zoom and f-stops and honestly my head is spinning. Im hoping to find something that works for pretty much everything, like capturing Cooper in the backyard but also maybe some nice travel shots when I go visit my parents in Chicago next month. My budget is pretty tight since I just dropped a few hundred on the body, maybe like 200 or 300 bucks max? Is there a lens that is basically just plug and play that makes my photos look less like an amateur took them? Or am I stuck with the kit lens forever...

It is a prime lens, which means you have to use your feet to zoom, but the f/1.8 aperture is a game changer for shutter speed. TL;DR: Grab a prime lens to solve that blur issue. Honestly, I had issues with zoom lenses for pets; they just dont let in enough light for fast action.
