Honestly, I am so fed up with lugging around my heavy kit lens and constantly switching glass while I am out shooting street photography in Chicago. It is driving me crazy! I have a Z6II and just want one solid lens that can actually handle everything without me missing shots because I am fumbling with my bag. My budget is around 1k and I need something by next month for a trip. I looked at the 24-120mm f/4 but it seems kinda bulky still? My logic was maybe a prime would be sharper but then I lose the zoom versatility. Should I just bite the bullet on the 24-120 or is there something better?

Honestly, street photography with a huge zoom is a pain. The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is sharp but yeah, it is definitely a brick. If you want something lighter for walking around, check these out:

> Prime lenses are life-changing for street stuff @Reply #2 - good point! But honestly, losing the zoom while traveling can be a nightmare if you need to catch a quick street shot across a busy Chicago intersection. I really think the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is worth the extra weight. It covers basically everything and saves you from carrying extra primes that might get lost or stolen. If you really cant do the bulk, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is significantly smaller and sharper than typical kit lenses, plus it fits the budget easily. I used that for months and never felt held back. Just dont overthink it. Grab one, head out, and enjoy the trip. Youre gonna be fine either way.

Just catching up on this thread. Honestly, if you hate the bulk of your current kit, stay away from anything with a constant aperture or that heavy glass construction. You will absolutely regret the weight on a long trip!

  • Prime lenses are life-changing for street stuff
  • Forget about the zoom range if it means carrying a paperweight
  • Compact primes make you invisible in crowds Trust me, travel light or you'll just leave the camera at the hotel!

Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.
