Im losing my mind trying to pick a lens for my Z6ii. I keep reading that the 24-120mm f/4 is the ultimate jack-of-all-trades but then someone else says the 24-70mm f/2.8 is the only way to go for professional work. Its so confusing because the price gap is huge and I dont know if the extra stop is worth that much weight. Im planning a trip to Iceland next month and just want one reliable setup.
- Budget is around 2k max.
- Use case is mostly travel and some street photography.
- Needs to be weather sealed.
- Not interested in carrying a massive bag of primes.
Does anyone actually use the 24-120 in low light or is f/4 just too limiting...
TL;DR: Skip the expensive pro glass and grab the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 if you actually care about that extra light. ^ This. Honestly, the 24-120mm is fine, but for Iceland you really want that f/2.8 aperture for those moody, low-light waterfalls and dark evenings! I think people obsess way too much over the S-line branding. The Tamron is sharp as a tack, super light, and way more budget-friendly so you can put that leftover cash toward some solid filters or even a flight upgrade. Youre gonna love the bokeh for street shots too. Carrying heavy gear all day in the wind is a total nightmare, so keeping the weight down while getting that faster aperture is a total win-win for travel!
Just checking this thread now. Have you looked at the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S? It is compact, sharp, and weather sealed for Iceland.
- Save money for a tripod
- Consider the smaller size
Saved for later, ty!
Honestly, grab the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S. I was shooting with it in similar conditions recently and was super satisfied with the results. That extra reach at the long end makes a huge difference for landscapes compared to the 70mm limit, and the sharpness is honestly insane across the whole frame. For Iceland, the weather sealing is solid, and you wont miss the f/2.8 as much as you think since the Z6ii handles high ISO like a beast. I find f/4 works well for travel because you arent lugging around the weight of the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S all day. My bag feels way lighter now and I have no complaints about the image quality. If you want a setup that covers everything without swapping glass, this is the one.
