Honestly, im about two seconds away from throwing my 18-55mm kit lens against a wall. Building on the earlier suggestion, the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G is basically your best bet for a crop sensor. In my experience, it handles low light better than the kit lens.
