My sisters graduation is next month here in Chicago and I volunteered to take her portraits, but I only have the kit lens. My budget is super tight, like under $200.

I did some digging and everyone points to the Nikon 50mm f1.8G, but then I read on Reddit that on a crop sensor like my D5600 it might be way too tight for indoor shots. But then others say the 35mm f1.8 is better but it distorts faces if you get too close. I am getting really anxious about messing this up. Which one should I actually buy?

Listen, dont overthink it. In my experience, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is the winner for portraits on a budget. Yeah, its a bit tight on your D5600 indoors, but it gives you that gorgeous background blur and way more flattering face shapes than the 35mm. If youre shooting graduation shots, just step back a bit... the results are gonna be night and day compared to your kit lens.
