What is the absolute best all-around lens for the Nikon D850 that actually delivers?

Im so done with my 24-120mm f/4, the soft corners are driving me crazy and I have a huge travel shoot in Italy in two weeks. Budget is around $1500, please tell me there is a sharper walk-around option before I lose my mind...

Im very satisfied with a used Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED. It easily fits your budget and just works.

  • tack sharp
  • built like tank No complaints here, super reliable.

Honestly, I went through the exact same frustration with the 24-120mm on my D850. That 45-megapixel sensor is absolutely brutal on older or mediocre glass. If you want tack-sharp corners without carrying a bag full of primes to Italy, you should grab the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2. I bought this lens a couple of years ago for travel and event work, and I have been incredibly satisfied with it. The image stabilization works incredibly well, and the sharpness easily matches the first-party Nikon equivalent but at a fraction of the cost. It usually runs around 1200 dollars new, which leaves you some extra cash for pasta and wine. The corners are way cleaner than your current lens, even shot wide open at f/2.8. It is a bit heavy, sure, but the build quality is top-notch and it handles the weather just fine. I have taken it through some pretty dusty and wet environments with zero complaints. It just works. Go grab one before your trip, you wont regret it.
