Im in a massive rush because I have a wedding shoot coming up in three weeks and my 50mm just isnt cutting it for portraits. Ive been looking at the Nikon 85mm f/1.8G versus the 105mm f/2.8 Macro. My budget is tight, like 500 bucks max, so the 1.4 versions are totally out. I really love the compression on the 105 but worry it might be too slow for low light reception shots. Then again the 85mm is cheaper but maybe a bit too common? I just cant decide. Has anyone used both on an FX body? Is the extra reach worth the loss in speed or am I overthinking this...?
Saw this earlier but only just now replying. Honestly I had issues with the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED during a dark reception, the autofocus was way slower than I expected and missed too many shots.
- The 105mm is super sharp but that f/2.8 aperture is unforgiving in low light.
- If you really want compression but need budget gear, maybe look at the Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD. Unfortunately it's a bit older now, but the stabilization saved me so many times.
Honestly, grab the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G. In my experience, that extra stop of light is way more valuable for wedding receptions than the macro reach.
