Honestly, im so fed up with my current setup right now. Ive been lugging around my old F-mount glass with the FTZ adapter on my Z6ii for way too long and its just driving me crazy. The focus hunting is getting worse, especially when I try to shoot my dogs running in the backyard or even just street stuff in downtown Chicago when the lighting gets a little dim. Im trying to catch these moments and the lens just decides to breathe or miss focus entirely and its making me want to throw the whole bag in the river. I dont have thousands to drop on the top-tier S-line glass but im definitely ready to move on from this clunky adapter lifestyle.
I need something sharp, snappy, and that actually balances well on the body without making it feel like a brick. Ive been looking at the 40mm f/2 because its cheap and tiny, but then I see people talking about the 50mm f/1.8 S and how its supposed to be this magical lens that makes everything else look like trash. Is the 50 really worth the extra cash or should I just grab the 40 and call it a day? My budget is probably around 500 bucks max since I just spent a fortune on a new laptop for editing, and I need to make a decision by next weekend because I have a family shoot coming up and I cant deal with this adapter failing me again. Has anyone actually tried using these in lower light without it being a total headache? Or is there something else I should be looking at that I missed?

To add to the point above: the jump from adapted glass to native Z-mount is honestly life changing. I used the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 for a while because it fits in a jacket pocket, but honestly, it just doesnt have the same AF bite as the S-line lenses when things get fast. If your main goal is tracking dogs or moving subjects, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S is the clear winner for a few reasons:
- It uses a multi-focus system that is way faster than the 40mm.
- Optical quality is top-tier; you can crop in and it stays tack sharp.
- Better weather sealing for when you're shooting street stuff in downtown Chicago. If the 50mm is slightly out of reach, check the used market. You can usually find them for a bargain since everyone is upgrading. Ditch the adapter and you'll actually start enjoying your Z6ii again.
To add to the point above: focus speed is honestly everything when you have pets. I spent way too long trying to make that adapter work before I finally bit the bullet and switched. The difference in reliability when you're tracking motion in dim light is night and day. Once you ditch the extra bulk, you'll actually start enjoying the camera again instead of fighting with the lens breathing constantly.
