Which prime lens should I buy for my Nikon camera?

So I was looking at lenses for my Nikon D7500 because my kit lens just isnt cutting it anymore especially in low light. I keep reading that a nifty fifty is the absolute must buy first prime lens for everyone and its super cheap so my logic was I should just grab the 50mm f1.8 and call it a day. But then I went down a YouTube rabbit hole and people in these street photography forums keep saying that on a crop sensor body like mine a 50mm acts more like a 75mm and thats way too tight for indoor shots and everyday wandering around town. Some reviews suggested the 35mm instead for a more natural field of view. So now Im kinda torn between the two because my budget is strictly under 250 bucks since Im heading on a trip to Seattle next month and need to save some cash for travel stuff. I mean I mostly wanna shoot street scenes, local coffee shops, and maybe some casual portraits of friends. Should I just get the 35mm or stick with the classic 50mm recommendation even if it feels a bit cramped indoors...

Honestly, the 50mm on a crop sensor drove me nuts when I tried traveling with it. Had issues framing anything inside cramped coffee shops, and half my shots were just people's faces up close.

  • Grab the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G instead, runs about 200 bucks
  • Much better field of view for Seattle streets Really disappointing focal length for walkaround stuff tbh, save yourself the headache.

Skip the 50mm for a crop sensor. In my experience, it forces you into way too tight of a corner indoors. Get the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G instead. It runs right around 200 bucks, hits that proper 50mm equivalent field of view, and handles low light in coffee shops easily.

  • Way more versatile for street stuff
  • Fits your sub-250 budget
  • Sharp wide open
