Ugh, I am literally losing my mind over this. I just bought a used Sony a6000 from a buddy and the lens that came with it is absolute garbage. It wont focus right and the pictures look so grainy, which is super annoying because I have my sisters wedding in three weeks and I really want to take decent shots. Im a total newbie at this and all the technical specs on the store sites are just flying over my head. I dont want to spend a fortune since I just dropped money on the camera body, maybe like 200 to 300 bucks max if I have to?

I just need something that works better than the kit lens, maybe something that makes the background look blurry because that looks cool? Im in Chicago so I guess I could look at local shops if they have good deals.

  • Needs to fit a Sony E-mount
  • Needs to be cheap, like under 300
  • Something good for portraits or just general people shots

Is there anything decent in that range or am I just dreaming? Everything I see online is like a thousand dollars which is just not happening for me right now. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am totally lost...

I started exactly where you are and you can definitely get pro-looking shots on that budget. Since you need something for portraits, have you considered just sticking to a fixed focal length instead of a zoom? It makes a huge difference for that blurry background effect you want. Over the years, I've found that the Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS is a total steal for portraits. It has stabilization built-in which is a lifesaver for a newbie. Are you planning on doing mostly indoor wedding shots or outdoor ones? That'll change whether you need a wider lens or if that 50mm is the right fit.

Dont worry, you arent dreaming. You can totally get great results on a budget. That kit lens is honestly notorious for being pretty weak indoors, so swapping it out is the smartest move you can make before the wedding. Here is what I would grab if I were in your shoes:

  • Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS is my top pick. Its super sharp and that wide aperture gives you that blurry background look you want, plus it has stabilization which helps with shaky hands.
  • Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is another beast. It lets in tons of light for evening receptions and the image quality is honestly pro-level for the price. Both of these will feel like a massive upgrade from your kit lens. Just keep an eye on used listings if you need to stay under that 300 mark, you will be fine.

Honestly, if you want that creamy background look for portraits, you should look at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens. It is sharp and lets in way more light than your kit lens. Just be careful with the focus at f/1.4, it is super shallow so take some practice shots before the big day. You might want to consider checking local Chicago camera shops for a used copy to save some cash.
