Can anyone point me toward a decent budget lens for my Sony a6400 because I am honestly about to lose my mind with this kit lens. I bought the camera used a few months back thinking it would be fine for travel photography, but the aperture is just useless indoors and I'm tired of my shots looking like muddy garbage whenever the sun goes down.
I need something better for street photography and maybe some low-light portraits, but I only have about 300 to 400 bucks to spend right now. I live in Chicago and have a trip coming up in about three weeks so I really need to grab something soon. Ive been looking at those Sigma prime lenses but I cant tell if they are worth the extra cash or if I should just look for a used Sony prime instead.
- Looking for something compact
- Needs to be sharper than the 16-50mm kit trash
- Prime or zoom is fine
Im just so frustrated trying to edit these blurry, dark photos from my last outing, it makes me want to put the camera in a drawer and forget about it. Does anyone have a specific lens that wont break the bank but actually delivers decent results?
Ditch that kit lens asap, it honestly ruins the a6400 potential. For your budget, grab the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens. It is sharp and handles low light way better. Just be careful with wide shots since it is a prime.
- Way faster aperture than the kit lens
- Super compact for travel
- Better autofocus performance It is a total game changer for Chicago streets, trust me.
Totally agree with the others that dumping the kit lens is the best move you can make for your sanity. If you want something super tiny that basically turns your a6400 into a point-and-shoot powerhouse, check out the Sony E 20mm F2.8 Pancake Lens. It's perfect for street stuff in Chicago since it's practically invisible and forces you to really engage with the scene. If you need more light for those indoor shots, maybe look into the Viltrox 23mm F1.4 E-Mount Autofocus Lens. I picked one up recently and honestly, it works well for the price point. No complaints here, especially for the portraits. Just remember to keep your shutter speed up when walking around town so you don't get any blur!
I totally feel your pain with that kit lens! Honestly, the difference once you switch to a prime is just mind-blowing. Since you are in Chicago and need something for street stuff, have you thought about how wide you actually like to shoot? Are you more into tight portraits or capturing the whole street scene? I really love the Sony E 35mm F1.8 OSS because having that stabilization is a lifesaver for night shots, especially if your hands aren't perfectly steady. It is super light and fits right into your budget if you hunt for a used copy! Another awesome choice if you want to go wider is the Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens. It is a bit bigger, but the sharpness is just insane for the money. Let me know what you lean towards!
