I feel so lost. I bought a Sony a6400 last month for my sisters wedding in June but the kit lens just looks so boring and flat. Everyone says I need a prime lens for portraits but there are like a million choices and im totally confused. Whats the best one under 500 bucks?

Regarding what #1 said about ditching that kit lens, they are 100 percent right. I spent years pixel-peeping my shots on my a6000 and the difference when switching to a prime is just night and day. If you want a sharp image without breaking the bank, grab the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary. Its sharpness wide open at 1.4 is honestly insane for the price point. I used it for a wedding shoot back in 2021 and the bokeh transition is so much smoother than anything else in that budget range. The field of view ends up being like a 45mm equivalent on your sensor, which feels super natural for candid shots. Dont overthink the technical specs too much, just get this one and start shooting.

> grab the Sigma 30mm @Reply #2 - good point! In my experience, you should definitely grab the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary for that budget. It's built like a tank, seriously.

Honestly, ditching that kit lens is the best move you will ever make! I remember feeling totally overwhelmed when I first started too. I ended up picking up a fast prime and it completely changed my portraits. The background blur is just amazing and it makes everything look professional instantly. Just find something in that 35mm to 50mm range and you will absolutely love it for the wedding!
