Which prime lens should I buy first for my Sony A7III because I am freaking out and leave for a trip to Japan in like three weeks. My budget is capped at $700ish and I've been reading so many contradictory things online that my head is spinning. I see the Sony 35mm f/1.8 recommended everywhere as the 'perfect' first prime for street photography but then I go on some forums and everyone is obsessed with the 55mm Zeiss for its '3D pop' and sharpness. I'm worried the 35mm will feel too wide and I wont be able to isolate my subjects properly but then people say 55mm is way too tight for narrow alleys in Tokyo. I also looked at some Sigma stuff like the 35mm 1.4 but its so heavy and I dont want to be lugging a brick around all day while I'm walking 20k steps. I just want something fast for night shots that wont fail me. Should I just stick with the safe 35mm choice or is the 55mm actually worth the extra trouble of framing things? I really dont want to make the wrong choice and regret it once I'm actually there...
I would suggest playing it safe with the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 Large Aperture Prime Lens. Japan is super crowded and you might find the 55mm way too tight in those tiny Kyoto alleys. Be careful with those heavy Sigmas though, your back will definitely thank you later. The 35mm is basically the reliable choice for a reason... it wont fail you during those neon night walks.
