im honestly losing my mind trying to figure out lens compatibility across sony bodies. okay so im upgrading my setup, currently shooting on an older a6000 crop sensor because thats what I could afford back in college, but im saving up to eventually move to a full frame like the a7iv sometime early next year. my budget for the lens right now is around 600 to 800 bucks max since im also paying rent in boston and everything is so expensive. i need one versatile prime lens that I can use right now on my crop body for street photography and random portraits of my friends, but that wont become completely useless trash when I finally buy a full frame camera. Ive been reading forums all week and my brain is fried. some thread on reddit said buy a 35mm f1.8 because on crop it acts like a 50mm, but then other people argue that if you put an aps-c specific lens on a full frame later you get heavy vignetting or have to shoot in crop mode which defeats the whole point of upgrading. then I looked at full frame lenses like the sony 40mm f2.5 g, thinking my logic was smart since it works on both formats, but reviews are super mixed about whether its actually wide enough on a crop sensor or if the autofocus is loud for street stuff. I just want one solid glass that plays nice with literally any sony e-mount body past or present without me having to compromise too much. why is lens shopping so unnecessarily complicated man... does the perfect truly universal prime lens even exist or am I chasing a myth?

lens shopping is honestly a headache tbh. unfortunately theres no free lunch here. if you buy aps-c glass like the Sony E 35mm F1.8 OSS it wont cover full frame properly later. but full frame lenses like the Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G work fine on both tho. id grab the Samyang AF 35mm F1.8 FE instead. its cheap enough for your rent budget and works great on full frame later without vignetting issues.
