tbh ive been pretty disappointed with my recent sigma experiences. i really wanted the Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art to be the perfect choice but unfortunately the af just isnt as snappy as id like. i spent a decade shooting sigma but recently moved back to native glass because i had issues with hunting during client shoots. its just not as good as expected compared to the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM when things get fast.

  • are you shooting in studio or out in the elements?
  • does the 15fps cap on non-sony glass matter for your workflow?

It's a very close call, but I would probably pick the new Sigma 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art lens.

To add to the point above: it seems like the consensus is mostly that the Sigma is the better value unless you absolutely need that top tier AF speed for pro work. I've been using third party glass for years and honestly for hobbyist stuff you barely notice the difference in the final image. Most people wont even know which lens you used when they look at the photos online. Saving that extra cash is always nice tho. Last time I saved a few hundred on gear by going with a cheaper brand, I ended up putting it toward a new mountain bike frame because my old one basically snapped in half while I was out on the trails last summer. I had to hike like four miles back to the trailhead carrying the pieces and my camera bag was digging into my shoulder the whole time. My legs were destroyed for like a week after that hike and I almost lost my favorite water bottle in the brush. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
