What is the best all-around lens for a Sony camera because I seriously have no idea what I am doing? I just bought an a6400 to take on a trip to Japan next month and the kit lens just feels kinda meh. Im on a budget of like 500 bucks and just want one good lens for everything. Should I just get a prime or zoom?
Oh man, Japan is going to be absolutely epic with your new camera! Honestly, if you want something that really pops compared to the kit lens but still keeps you within that 500 dollar budget, you have to look at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary. It is honestly a game changer for low light and travel portraits. I know you mentioned zooms, but having that fast aperture is incredible for those neon signs in Tokyo at night. It is super sharp and tiny, so it wont weigh your bag down at all. If you really want a zoom, check out the Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III VC. You can usually find them used for a steal and the range is just insane for walking around all day. Youre gonna have such a blast!
Honestly, grab the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS. It covers basically everything you'll need for Japan and fits right into your budget. Zooms are way better for travel.
Just catching up on this thread now. Honestly, I think some of the previous advice is a bit risky for a big trip. I really prefer sticking to what works reliably rather than betting everything on a specific prime lens or a giant zoom. When you are traveling, you really dont want to be stressed about gear failures or having to change glass constantly in the middle of a crowded street.
- Stick to reputable brands like Sony or Tamron for the best reliability.
- Get a versatile zoom that feels sturdy in your hand.
- Always keep a spare battery, honestly its a lifesaver. If I were you, I would just find a reliable travel zoom from a solid brand and call it a day. You really cant go wrong if you stick with the big names, they have such better build quality compared to the cheaper stuff. I have been using gear from them for years and have been totally happy with how it holds up in all kinds of weather. Dont overthink the specs too much. Just pick something that feels like itll survive being shoved in a backpack while you are hopping on and off trains. Have an awesome time in Japan, you are gonna love it.
