So I finally bit the bullet and bought a Sony A7C because I want to get into photography and honestly I am so pumped but also completely lost. I keep reading about lenses online and my head is spinning, everyone uses these weird numbers like 24-70 or 35mm and I have no idea what any of it means. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just want one lens that does pretty much everything so I dont have to carry a bag full of glass around yet.

My budget is around 800 bucks maybe a little more if its totally worth it, and I really need this for my trip to Italy in September. I mostly want to take cool shots of the architecture and maybe some portraits of my friends while we are out at dinner. Here is what I am looking for:

  • Needs to be an all-in-one zoom so I dont have to switch lenses
  • Not too heavy because I will be walking all day
  • Easy enough for a beginner to figure out
  • Sharp enough that I dont feel like I wasted my money

Is there a go-to lens that people usually recommend for someone like me who is just starting out? Everything I see is super expensive or way too technical...

Grab the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2. In my experience, its light and super sharp for travel. Much better than the kit lens for those Italian dinner portraits.

Like someone mentioned, sticking to one lens is the best call for Italy. Honestly, I took the Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS on my last trip and it was a total lifesaver. That extra reach is amazing for architecture details!

  • Super versatile range
  • Built-in stabilization helps in dim restaurants
  • Solid value for the quality If that feels a bit pricey, look for a used copy on a marketplace. You'll save enough for way more wine and gelato!

Jumping in here. Honestly, sticking with one lens is the best move for traveling light. I remember hauling way too much gear my first trip abroad and totally regretting it. You really want to just enjoy the pasta, right?

  • Look into anything from Sigma or Sony itself.
  • A standard zoom range covers most architecture.
  • Smaller aperture lenses are lighter for walking. Just dont overthink the specs. Grab a versatile zoom and start shooting.
