So I finally picked up a Sony a6000 after wanting one forever but I honestly have no clue how lenses work. The kit lens that came with it is okay I guess but everyone keeps saying I need a prime lens for better photos of my cat and just general stuff around the house. My budget is tight like maybe 300 bucks max since I just spent all my money on the camera itself. I see so many options online and get totally overwhelmed by all the numbers. Which prime lens should I actually get for a beginner who just wants sharper shots?

> everyone keeps saying I need a prime lens for better photos of my cat Honestly, I tried the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary for my pets and had issues with the autofocus speed being kinda unreliable in low light. It was super frustrating. For a tight budget, check out the Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS instead. It has built-in stabilization which helps a ton with those blurry cat shots. Sites like DXOMARK are great for comparing sharpness data if you get bored.

Just catching up here! You absolutely need the Sony E 20mm F2.8 Pancake Lens. It is super tiny, affordable, and makes your a6000 feel like a pocket camera again. Love it!

Congrats on the a6000! Honestly, it is such a legendary little camera. I remember when I first ditched my kit lens, it felt like I was wearing glasses for the first time. Everything just pops, especially when you are trying to capture a cat that refuses to sit still for more than a second. Since you are on a budget, you really do not need to drop a fortune to get that pro look. Seriously, stop looking at those expensive G-Master lenses for now and just grab this one:

  • Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS
  • This is basically the holy grail for a6000 users on a budget. It has built-in image stabilization which is a total lifesaver for indoor shots where the light is kinda dim. I used this exact lens for like two years straight. The background blur you get is just beautiful and it makes even a boring pile of laundry look like high art. Plus, the 35mm focal length is super versatile for walking around the house or taking pics of your cat while they are chilling on the couch. Just keep an eye on the used market too! You can find them in fantastic condition way under your 300 dollar limit if you check a few reputable sites. You are gonna love it, I promise!
