literally just got my a7IV and I'm stuck on which 35mm prime to grab. I'm mainly doing street photography and taking pics of my kids at the park. right now I'm looking at the Sony 35mm f1.8 vs the Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art. the Sigma has that nice f1.4 look but it seems huge compared to the Sony.
some things I'm thinking about:
- budget is around $850 max
- going to Japan next month so I need something light-ish
- fast autofocus is a must for the toddlers
is the Sigma too bulky for travel? or is the Sony f1.8 just a bit boring? I've heard mixed things about the color rendering on the Sigma...
I'd stick with the Sony FE 35mm f1.8 SEL35F18F. While the Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art has better rendering, its 640g weight is a lot for travel. The Sony uses dual linear motors which provide faster focus acquisition for tracking kids. It only weighs 280g and fits your budget while being plenty sharp for the a7IV sensor. The Sigma is nice but probably too heavy for your trip.
