Im honestly so done with my 24-70 f4. I spent all morning trying to get some decent shots of my daughter in the park and everything just looks flat and honestly kinda muddy. Im literally shaking right now because Ive got this paid family shoot in Austin next weekend and I have nothing to show for it. I thought this lens would be enough but the bokeh is basically non-existent and Im freaking out that Im gonna look like a total amateur.
I need a prime that actually gives me that creamy background everyone talks about. Ive got about 1100 saved up and Im looking at the 85mm 1.8 or maybe a used G Master if thats even possible but I dont want to buy something and hate it again. Which Sony lens is actually the gold standard for full-frame portraits because I cant keep guessing...
Look, dont panic. That f4 lens is never gonna give you the creamy separation you want for portraits, especially at a park. Since you have 1100 saved, you actually have plenty for a solid upgrade before that Austin shoot. I would suggest focusing on these options:
- Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 Prime Lens is honestly the smartest move. Its light, super sharp, and way under your budget so you can keep some cash.
- You might want to consider a used Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Full Frame Lens, but be careful because it is very heavy and the autofocus can be a bit slower than the newer stuff.
- The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E is an absolute beast and usually fits right in your budget new. Just make sure to practice before the big day. Nailing focus at f/1.4 is a lot harder than f/4, and you dont want blurry eyes. Youll do great tho, just need the right tool for the job!
