Ive been shooting architecture for a decade but just jumped to the R5 and the wide angle options are breaking my brain. Got a massive real estate shoot in downtown Seattle next Tuesday and I need to buy something today. My logic was to grab the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 for the fast glass but then I saw the 14-35mm f/4 is wider and lighter.

Im stuck between:

  • RF 15-35mm f/2.8L
  • RF 14-35mm f/4L

Is the digital correction on the 14-35 gonna ruin the edges of my frames? Im worried the 45mp sensor will show every little flaw if the software is stretching the image too much. Budget is around $2,300. Do I go for the f2.8 or is the f4 actually better for high res work...

Honestly, its kind of a bummer that Canon leaned so hard into software for their mirrorless glass. I tested the Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM thinking that extra 1mm would be a lifesaver for tight Seattle interiors, but the raw vignetting is basically off the charts before the camera profile fixes it. On a 45mp sensor, you definitely notice the pixels stretching in the corners. It just wasnt as sharp as I expected... Heres my take on the two:

  • Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM: Optically superior with much better corner resolution. It has far less native barrel distortion, making it a better fit for high res work.
  • Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM: Unfortunately, the digital correction is doing too much heavy lifting. You lose some of that field of view anyway once the profile crops the frame to fix the dark corners. Go for the f2.8 glass.
