Im heading to Tokyo in just two weeks for a street photography workshop and I seriously need to nail down my lens choice before I fly out. I have been going back and forth between the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM and the 24mm f/1.4 GM. Budget isnt a massive deal since I saved up for this trip, but I need something I can carry all day without killing my back.

  • The 35mm feels more natural for candid shots
  • The 24mm lets me get way closer in those tight alleyways

Im totally torn because I dont want to be swapping glass in the rain. Which one is gonna be more versatile for a pro setup?

Just stick with the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM for that trip. In my experience, the versatility is unmatched for street work when you cannot swap lenses in the rain.

Honestly, I had such a rough time with the 35mm GM in Tokyo last year. The weight was killer for all-day walks and I felt like I wasted my money. You should look at the Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G instead. It is way lighter on the wallet and my back, plus it is discreet enough to not freak people out. Save your cash for better gear like a solid bag.

Honestly, I have spent a ton of time shooting in Tokyo and I have to be real with you—the 24mm GM is a bit of a letdown for street stuff. Unfortunately, I had issues with that focal length feeling way too wide for candid work, and the distortion made people look kinda weird when they were near the edges of the frame. It just wasnt as good as expected for a dedicated street prime. Grab the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM Full-Frame Large-Aperture Wide-Angle Prime Lens instead. It is the absolute gold standard for a reason. You can walk around all day without it feeling like a brick, and the rendering is just so much more natural than the 24mm. If you really feel like you need that wide perspective in those tight alleyways, maybe consider picking up the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Ultra-Wide Prime Lens as a secondary option. It is lighter and honestly feels sharper in the corners than the 24mm ever did for me. Dont sweat the rain too much, just keep a decent weather-sealed setup and stay focused on the composition. If you run into any trouble with your settings while you are out there, just shoot me a message. You are gonna have a blast in Tokyo, it is a street photography paradise.
