Ive been shooting with crop sensor DSLRs for like five years now so moving over to the EOS R50 felt pretty straightforward once I got used to the RF-S mount limitations. Im heading to Japan in about two months for a two-week trip and trying to pack light yknow? The kit lens is fine and all for daytime stuff but Im really wanting something with a wider aperture for evening street shots and maybe some moody izakaya photos. My budget is pretty tight right now cause of the flight costs, trying to stay under three hundred bucks if possible. I was looking at the RF 50mm f1.8 cause its super cheap and tiny, but man, on a 1.6 crop sensor thats an 80mm equivalent which feels way too tight for indoor dining and narrow alleys. My logic was maybe I should just save up for the Sigma RF adapters or wait to see if third party autofocus primes drop soon, but time is running out before my trip. Has anyone actually found a decent budget-friendly wide or standard prime for this specific body that doesnt break the bank...

Tokyo alleys are way too tight for an 80mm equivalent, trust me. Skip the nifty fifty for this trip.

  • Grab the Canon RF 28mm f2.8 STM instead if you can stretch the budget just a tiny bit, or look into a cheap manual TTArtisan lens for now.
  • Be careful with manual focus at night tho, it gets frustrating fast in dark izakayas.
  • Make sure to test whatever you buy before leaving.
