Which wildlife lens should I buy for Canon EOS R7? I keep going back and forth between the RF 100-400 and the bigger RF 200-800 and honestly Im getting nowhere fast. I read that the 100-400 is super light and cheap which is great for hiking around my local state parks here in upstate NY, but then people on youtube keep saying you always want more reach especially with the 1.6 crop sensor on the R7. But the 800mm beast is massive and way over my ideal budget of around 1500 bucks since it costs like 2 grand and is impossible to find in stock anyway. Plus Im mostly gonna be shooting birds and maybe the occasional deer from a distance, so I need something sharp enough to handle the crazy pixel density of the R7 sensor. Should I just save up for the big boy or start with the cheaper one to see if I actually stick with wildlife photography before spending serious cash? Let me know what you guys think...
In my experience, you should definitely start with the lighter, cheaper option. I've tried many big heavy beasts over the years and they just stay home if hiking is involved.
- Save your money for now
- Get out in the woods more
- Upgrade later if you actually need the reach Honestly, carrying a massive lens gets old real fast when you're just walking state park trails.
