Im losing my mind trying to pick a lens for my 5D Mark IV. Ive seen people swear by the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 but others say the Tamron 15-30mm is sharper and way cheaper. Im shooting a cross-country trip next month in the PNW and honestly just want something reliable.
- Budget is around 1200 bucks
- Must be weather-sealed
- Wide angle is priority
Is the extra cash for the Canon worth it or am I gonna regret missing out on that Tamron glass?
Like someone mentioned, reliability is key out there. Honestly, save the cash and just grab the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2. It is super sharp and works perfectly fine.
To add to the point above: are you planning on using filters for those PNW shots? Because that Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM takes them easily, unlike the Tamron bulb.
Honestly, spending a fortune on glass when you are traveling cross-country can be a total headache. I have been through plenty of gear in the Pacific Northwest, and I would suggest you lean toward established professional optics if you need something that will actually survive the elements. Dealing with heavy rain and mist out there means that weather sealing is not just a suggestion, it is a requirement. If I were you, I would stick with native mount glass from the manufacturer of your body. You might want to consider saving your money for the trip itself rather than splitting hairs over sharpness between these two brands. Just find a reliable wide-angle zoom from the main manufacturer and you really cannot go wrong. Make sure to check the seals before you leave.
