Just picked up an R6 Mark II for some upcoming weddings in the spring and I am stuck on lenses. Ive been looking at the RF 85mm f/2 but then I saw people hyping up the older EF 85mm f/1.4 L with an adapter. The budget is around 1200 bucks max since the body already set me back a ton. Im mostly worried about the autofocus speed with the adapter because I really dont want to miss shots during the reception when things get crazy. Is the native lens actually sharp enough compared to the L glass or am I just overthinking the adapter situation? Really curious what you guys think is the best way to go here...
Honestly, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I had some issues with the adapter route when I was using the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM on my body. Everyone says the adapter works perfectly, but in low light at receptions, I experienced some micro-stuttering that made me miss focus on a few key shots. It was super frustrating and not as snappy as I expected for a professional L-series lens. If you are worried about speed, unfortunately, you just cant beat native glass. I ended up switching over to the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM to save some cash, and while it lacks that f/1.4 dreamy look, the autofocus is dead silent and consistent. It is definitely sharp enough for wedding work, honestly. If you really need that wider aperture, maybe check the used market for a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art specifically made for EF, but keep in mind that even that one felt a bit bulky once you add the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. My advice? Stick with the native RF lens. It will save you a headache during fast-paced events, and you can always rent a faster prime if you have a high-end portrait session later on. Dont overthink the sharpness, the RF glass is plenty good for prints.
Just save the cash and snag the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM. It is plenty sharp for weddings.
- Super light
- Great stabilization
- Native autofocus is snappy Really, you are overthinking this.
