I'm looking to put together a lightweight travel kit for my Canon EOS R6 Mark II camera. What are some of the best RF mount lenses for travel photography in your experience? I'm interested in a versatile zoom as well as a couple of primes.

For Canon RF mount cameras, three excellent travel lenses are:

  1. Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM ($1,299): A versatile all-rounder with a constant aperture, ideal for landscapes and portraits.

  2. Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM ($2,099): Perfect for capturing wide-angle shots, this lens offers a fast aperture and image stabilization, making it great for architecture and star photography.

  3. Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM ($199): A compact and lightweight prime lens that delivers stunning bokeh, perfect for street photography and low-light situations.

These lenses provide flexibility and high-quality results for varied travel photography needs.

When choosing lenses for travel photography with a Canon RF mount camera, you'll want options that are versatile, compact, and deliver excellent image quality. Here are some of the best RF lenses to consider for your travel kit:

1. Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

  • Versatile zoom range from wide-angle to short telephoto
  • Constant f/4 aperture throughout the zoom range
  • Built-in image stabilization
  • Ideal as a walk-around lens for travel

2. Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM

  • Ultra-wide angle zoom for landscapes and architecture
  • Fast f/2.8 constant aperture for low light performance
  • Image stabilization built-in
  • Rugged weather-sealed construction

3. Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM

  • Telephoto zoom for compressed landscapes, details, wildlife
  • Lighter and more compact than the f/2.8 version
  • Constant f/4 aperture and 5 stops of image stabilization
  • Pairs well with the 24-105mm for a two-lens travel kit

4. Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM

  • Compact, lightweight 35mm prime lens
  • Fast f/1.8 aperture and IS for handheld shooting
  • 1:2 macro capability for close-up shots
  • Affordable and takes up little space in a travel bag

5. Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM

  • Extremely fast f/1.2 prime lens for low light and shallow DOF
  • Incredible sharpness and image quality
  • Ideal for portraits, street photography, food, details
  • Built like a tank but still travel-friendly size

Those are some of the top Canon RF mount lenses to consider for travel photography depending on your preferences and needs. The 24-105mm f/4 and 35mm f/1.8 make a very capable and compact two-lens kit. Add the 15-35mm for ultra-wide shots or the 70-200mm for more reach. The 50mm f/1.2 is perfect if you want the best possible quality in a fast prime.

I've found my go-to lightweight travel setup to be the Canon R5 paired with the RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM lens. This combo has become my preferred choice over my previous Leica Q2.

While the Leica Q2 has a nice 28mm focal length, I've found that I personally prefer the versatility of a 35mm lens. The RF 35/1.8 Macro gives me that classic "normal" field of view that I find so useful for travel and everyday shooting.

In addition to this everyday 35mm lens, I have other RF lenses in my kit for specific needs - the RF 100mm Macro for close-up work, and the RF 100-500mm for wildlife, sports, and other distant subjects.

But the 35/1.8 Macro is the real star of my lightweight travel setup. The autofocus on the R5 is fantastic, keeping my subjects tack sharp. And with the high resolution of the R5's sensor, I have plenty of pixels to work with for cropping and editing.

I'll admit, the 35/1.8 Macro doesn't get the same hype as some of Canon's other RF lenses. But in my experience, it punches well above its weight. The image quality is superb, with beautiful bokeh that makes my subjects really pop. And the macro capability is a nice bonus for those occasional close-up shots.

All in all, this R5 + 35/1.8 Macro combo has become my go-to travel setup. It's lightweight, versatile, and delivers fantastic results. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a compact, high-performing kit.
