I'm looking to get into product photography and recently purchased a Canon EOS R5 camera. I'm trying to decide which RF lens would be best suited for shooting small to medium sized products like jewelry, cosmetics, electronics, etc. Any suggestions from those with experience doing this type of photography with the RF system?
For product photography with a Canon RF mount camera, I'd highly recommend the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. Here's why:
- It offers 1.4x magnification for highly detailed close-up shots
- The f/2.8 aperture provides nice background separation and bokeh
- Built-in image stabilization helps when shooting handheld
- The lens is extremely sharp edge-to-edge
- It focuses quickly and accurately, even at macro distances
I've used this lens extensively for product shots and it never disappoints. The results are tack sharp with beautiful color rendering. It's an excellent choice if macro capability is important for your product photography needs.

For product photography with a...
- honestly im basically in the same boat right now even tho ive been doing this for a decade. Just got the Canon EOS R5 and im struggling to settle on one choice for my jewelry workflow.
- Shooting some vintage watches yesterday made me realize my current setup just felt... off.
- High-end detail is there but the workflow feels slow when im trying to get that perfect focus stack on tiny gears.
- Most of my morning was spent looking at sample raws because im so picky about how the out of focus areas look. Im super happy with the camera body itself but yeah, picking the glass for this specific niche is stressing me out too lol. Its such a specific look you need for products. My current lens works well for general stuff but for this? No complaints about the R5, just need to find that perfect pairing...
Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!
@Reply #3 - good point! Honestly, the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is such a sleeper hit for this kind of work. I've used it for a bunch of tabletop tech shoots and it is amazing how much detail it pulls! Love seeing more people jump into the R5 ecosystem too, that sensor is just fantastic for picking up every tiny detail. Just to help narrow things down tho, what kind of lighting setup are you planning to use for your products? And are you looking to do a lot of focus stacking for those tiny jewelry bits, or do you need something that can handle most of the depth in a single shot? Knowing that would really help figure out which way to lean!

I also recommend this lens, most of my Amazon products are shooting with this lens.
Macro lens is great for product photography.
For product photography using Canon RF mount cameras, Canon RF 100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM lens is often considered one of the best choices.
Re: "I also recommend the RF 100mm f/2.8 Macro..." - honestly I am in the exact same boat right now. Even after years of doing this professionally, getting the R5 workflow perfectly dialed in for high-end macro work has been more of a headache than I expected.
- Diffraction limited aperture on the R5 sensor starts hitting hard around f/8.0, which makes deep focus single shots nearly impossible for jewelry.
- The step size logic in the body firmware doesn't always seem to compensate perfectly for the focus breathing on the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM during a 50-shot stack. Its kinda a relief to see I am not the only one overthinking these technical specs while trying to get a clean shot.
If you are looking for a cheaper one, get the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Lens.
I also recommend the RF 100mm f/2.8 Macro IS USM lens.
Wish third party companies like Sigma to release some macro lenses.
