Hello fellow photographers and videographers,

I recently acquired the Canon EOS R7 and I'm excited to start shooting some amazing video content with it. However, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the lens options available and could really use some guidance.

I'm looking for a versatile lens that will excel in capturing high-quality video footage. Factors I'm considering include autofocus performance, image stabilization, low-light capabilities, and overall sharpness and clarity.

If you have experience with the Canon EOS R7 or are knowledgeable about video lenses compatible with this camera, I would greatly appreciate your recommendations. Please share your thoughts on the best lens options, along with any personal experiences or insights you may have.

Jumping in because I've been using the R7 for a long time now and honestly i'm so satisfied with how it handles video. If you want a stress-free experience, just stick with the Canon brand glass made specifically for their mirrorless crop sensors. It works so well and the communication between the lens and the body is basically flawless for tracking subjects.

  • Stick to the native Canon RF-S line for the best autofocus.
  • Look for lenses with built-in stabilization to help that in-body sensor.
  • Get a versatile zoom so you dont have to swap glass constantly. I've never had a complaint about the sharpness or how the focus stays locked during a shoot. You're gonna love the R7 once you get some native glass on it... just shout if you need more help narrowing things down!

Building on the earlier suggestion, I have found over the years that staying with official lists is the only way to ensure your gear doesnt fail mid-shoot. Ive tried many setups and being cautious has saved me a lot of headache. Before I give you my full thoughts, I need to know a couple things:

  • are you planning to do mostly handheld vlogging or stationary tripod work?
  • what kind of lighting do you usually work with? Honestly, theres a great youtube video about this specific setup. Just search for canon r7 video lens comparison and its like the first result that pops up. Canon also has a whole guide on their official site about which glass plays best with the r7 autofocus and stabilization systems. I usually just look there first to be safe...

I've been shooting for over a decade now and honestly, the R7 is one of my favorite bodies for video. I remember back when we had to manually focus everything on the 5D, but this new tech is insane! I recently compared my Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM against my old adapted Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art and the native glass just wins every time for video work. The focus is silent and way more confident when I'm tracking people moving around. Quick tip: Stick to native RF glass for video because the communication speed with the body makes a huge difference for the IBIS. Also, keep an eye on your shutter angle if you want that cinematic motion blur! Love how easy this camera makes everything feel.

Man I am struggling with this exact same thing right now!! It is so cool to see someone else as hyped about the R7 as I am, but gosh, picking the right glass is stressful. I have been shooting for ages and still find myself staring at my kit bag totally lost... honestly it's a blessing and a curse. One thing I really gotta warn you about though... whatever you do, dont try to go the super cheap DIY route with those weird unbranded mount adapters. I tried to save some cash by hack-jobbing an old manual lens onto mine last month and I almost bricked the whole body! The pins didnt line up right and it gave me this terrifying error code. Ive seen people literally snap their lens mounts trying to force budget gear to work. Its so tempting to try and rig something up ourselves to save a few bucks but it is NOT worth the risk of killing your sensor. Im still trying to figure out my own setup without breaking something lol.

Waiting for Sigma and tamron to released APS-C RF mount lenses.

Get RF-S 10-18mm lens and RF-S 18-150mm lens. With these two lenses, you can shoot great videos.
