Honestly so fed up with my current setup. I tried shooting some macro shots of flowers in my backyard yesterday and the focus ring on my kit lens kept slipping and it was driving me absolutely insane. I spent like three hours out there and maybe got two shots that werent blurry. Im just done with the struggle honestly. I have a Canon 90D and I really want to get into insect photography before the season ends in a few weeks, but I need something that actually works. My budget is around 500 bucks, maybe 600 if I find a really good deal on a used one. Im in the UK so stuff gets kinda pricey here but what is everyone actually using? Is the Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM still the gold standard or is there something newer I should be looking at? I dont want to waste more money on something that isnt going to give me that super sharp detail. Its just so frustrating when the gear gets in the way of what I want to capture. Does anyone have a recommendation that wont break the bank but still gives me those crisp, professional looking shots?
Honestly, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is still a solid choice. You can find them used for a steal these days, which leaves cash for a decent flash. If you want something sharper or newer, check out the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro. Its stabilization is a lifesaver for handheld insect shots when you're out in the garden. Dont overthink it, either lens will be a massive upgrade over that kit zoom.
If you want pure sharpness for bugs, I'd suggest looking at the Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD. Just be careful with the autofocus speed when hunting.
Late to the party, but honestly, have you looked at the Tokina AT-X M100 AF PRO D 100mm f/2.8 Macro? Its build quality is kinda old school, but the sharpness is just insane for the price. Just be careful with the focus switch mechanism, as it can feel a bit clunky compared to Canon lenses. Definitely a great way to save some cash for a diffuser or a decent light setup.
