Belly is probably spot on with that 2500 dollar guess. Honestly, thats a terrifying amount of money to drop on something that might have first-gen issues. I remember when I finally saved up for the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM thinking it would be perfect, but it just felt so fragile and the autofocus was acting up on my copy. Not as good as I expected for that kind of investment. Im definitely gonna play it safe this time and wait for some real world reviews. If youre like me and just want something reliable that wont break the bank:

  • just grab the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM
  • it only costs around 500 bucks
  • its tiny and much easier to travel with I just cant justify the risk of a high-end L lens right now when the cheaper stuff is actually more dependable for my daily shooting... maybe in a few years when the price drops and the bugs are fixed.

I'm definitely getting this lens! I've been waiting for Canon's take on a 35mm f/1.4 prime for their RF mount. The 35mm focal length is my favorite for an all-around walkabout lens. And f/1.4 is a must-have for low light flexibility and subject isolation. I primarily shoot portraits and events, so this ticks all the boxes. Yes, it's expensive, but the image quality and weather sealing will be worth it for my needs.

I definitely agree with the cautious approach. I've tried many primes over the years and jumping in on day one is always a bit of a gamble.

  • In my experience, letting others find the QC issues first is way safer, especially since rivals like Nikon have been so consistent with their high-end glass lately.
  • Reliability is everything to me, so I wont be buying until there is proof it can handle professional abuse. I can definitely give some input if you have questions about using the older EF versions in the meantime!

Honestly, waiting a bit like Vica mentioned is the smart play. Ive been through enough gear cycles to know that pre-ordering isnt always the dream its cracked up to be. In my experience, the perfect lens usually reveals its real-world quirks only after six months of heavy field use. If you are on the fence, here is how I see the current landscape based on what I have used over the years:

  • Canon RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM: This is the new standard. Better video integration and faster AF than the old EF glass, but that $1500-2500 price tag is gonna sting.
  • Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM: Its small and light. Great for street stuff, but it feels like a toy compared to the L series and the AF motor is kinda noisy for pro work.
  • Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM: Still a beast. I have owned this for years and it is practically indestructible. Adapting this is still a viable move if the new RF build quality feels suspect. Im definitely gonna let the early adopters deal with the initial firmware updates. Long-term reliability matters more than being first.
