I've been shooting with my R7 for a few months and really want to get into some proper macro photography this spring before all the cool bugs disappear. Im mostly looking at flowers and spiders in my garden but Im totally torn on which glass to get. I have about $1000 to spend and I need something that isnt gonna kill my wrist since I have a bit of carpal tunnel so weight is a big deal for me.

Right now I'm looking at:

  • Canon RF 100mm f2.8L (looks amazing with that 1.4x magnification but its heavy)
  • Canon RF 85mm f2 (cheaper and lighter but is it "real" macro?)
  • Laowa 85mm f5.6 (super tiny but no autofocus scares me a bit)

Is the 100mm L worth the extra weight on a crop sensor or is the 85mm enough for tiny stuff...

  • Grab the Canon RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM!
  • Its fantastic and way lighter than that heavy L glass.
  • Honestly, even at 0.5x magnification your garden photos will look amazing!
