What lens should I get for my Canon 90D if I just want one that does everything? Im a total beginner and honestly I feel so dumb looking at all the different numbers and brands online. I just bought the camera used and it didnt come with a lens so I cant even use it yet.

I have a few things I want to photograph this summer:

  • my kids soccer games
  • landscapes at the lake
  • family portraits

My budget is around 400 dollars since I already spent a lot on the body. Is there one lens that can zoom in but also take wide pictures or do I have to buy a bunch of different ones...

> kids soccer games Coming back to this... how old are your kids? If theyre on a full-size pitch, 135mm might actually be too short to see their faces. Like someone mentioned, the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is basically the gold standard here. Its got the Nano USM motor which is insanely fast for tracking movement. Just be careful with cheaper superzooms like the 18-300mm ones, they usually get pretty soft and blurry at the edges.

Agreeing with the 18-135mm recommendation, its definitely the most versatile choice. To stay under budget, check out a used Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM from places like MPB. You can usually find one for under $300, which leaves room for a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I card. Buying used gear is a very practical way to get quality optics without going over that $400 limit.

Honestly, be careful with cheap third-party lenses. I once bought one that basically broke during a trip... total nightmare. You might want to consider the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. It does everything. 18mm is wide enough for the lake and 135mm zooms in for soccer. Just make sure to check the glass for scratches before buying. Its the safest all-in-one for your budget.

@Reply #3 - good point! honestly i am in the exact same boat as you right now. i picked up a used 90D body for a project weeks ago and i have just been staring at it because i can not find a single lens that actually meets my reliability standards without breaking that 400 dollar limit. it is super frustrating because even though people suggest the usual stuff i have major reservations after looking at the technical data.

  • the barrel build quality on most zooms feels too light for my kids games
  • i am seeing too much reports of corner softness at the wide end
  • the aperture drops too fast when zooming in i have spent way too much time looking at specs and i still havent bought anything. i am honestly stuck and it is driving me crazy that i cant find an answer that works for me either.
