What should I actually get as a walk-around lens for the R5 Mark II? Im feeling super anxious about dropping this much cash. Ive read that the 24-70mm f/2.8 is the gold standard but others are pushing the 24-105mm for travel. I need something for street photography around NYC next month and cant decide..

Had a moment to think about this more and honestly, you dont need to drop a small fortune to get awesome shots in the city. If you want to keep some cash in your pocket for more gear later, look at the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM. Its incredibly light and affordable compared to the L series lenses.

  • It handles street photography perfectly well for general use.
  • Being that light means you wont feel exhausted walking through Times Square all day.
  • You can pick up a good quality used one if you really wanna save extra money. Everything works well with the R5 Mark II autofocus, so just grab it and enjoy your trip. If you need any tips on finding reputable places to buy used glass, just let me know.

Honestly, the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is great but unfortunately heavy. For NYC, I find the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM much more versatile for street work.

Late to the party but honestly, my back really hated that heavy glass after a full day walking the city. I eventually switched to something lighter and never looked back.
