Whats the best all-around zoom for the R5 Mark II that wont make me regret spending all this money? I honestly cant decide and its driving me crazy. Ive been looking at the RF 24-70mm f2.8 because everyone says its the pro choice but then I see folks raving about the 24-105mm f4 for the extra range and weight savings. Im shooting a wedding in Seattle this November and I know the lighting is gonna be trash so I need something that can handle low light but I also want a lens for my trip to Japan next year. Is the f2.8 really worth the extra bulk and losing that 30mm on the long end? My budget is pretty tapped out at $2500 after the body purchase so I can really only pick one...

Everyone agrees the f2.8 is the winner here!

I did a shoot in Seattle a few years back and the dim lighting almost ruined my shots. I would suggest being careful with f4 for weddings... that extra light is huge. You might want to consider the Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM tho. To save money, I would suggest looking at used options so you dont blow your whole travel fund.

Honestly, I've been super satisfied with the Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM. Since you're on the R5 II, you can just use crop mode to get that extra reach if you really need it for Japan. For the wedding, f2.8 is non-negotiable. Seattle in November is basically perpetual twilight, so that extra stop is a life saver. No complaints so far, it just works.

Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!

Like someone mentioned, that extra light is a life saver for the gloomy PNW, but honestly its ridiculous how much we are expected to pay for basic gear these days. It drives me crazy that after spending thousands on a body, you are still stuck choosing between range or low light. Its such a scam that the glass costs as much as the camera itself.

  • I bought an expensive RF zoom for a trip last year and it was a total letdown. The zoom ring felt crunchy after a week and the weather sealing was not as good as expected when things got misty. I ended up having to tape the seams myself just to feel safe.
  • The thread basically says you have to get the Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM or you are gonna regret it at the wedding, which just proves how limited the options are if you dont want to go broke.
  • The fact that we have to talk about refurbished gear just to stay under a $2500 budget is just disappointing. I have started doing my own basic maintenance because I am tired of being overcharged for service that doesnt even fix the soul of the lens. These companies really dont care about the long-term user anymore, they just want the next upgrade cycle.

ive tried so many different setups over the years and honestly reliability is everything when youre shooting a wedding. if youre worried about the low light in seattle just go with any of the pro zooms from canon. you really cant go wrong with their l series stuff since the build quality is basically bulletproof and they handle the moisture way better than the cheaper ones. speaking of seattle i actually lived there for a bit and the coffee is honestly what kept me sane during the winter lol. i used to spend all my time at this little shop in capitol hill just people watching and taking street shots while it poured outside. its such a vibe but yeah it definitely gets dark early. anyway just get any of those pro zooms and youll be fine for japan too.
