Ive been shooting with the R5 for two years now mostly doing portraits with primes but I just got hit with a surprise travel gig in Norway and I leave in five days. I need one lens that can do it all because Im packing light and my logic was originally the 24-70 f2.8 but man that price tag is hitting $2300 right now and my budget is strictly $2k max. I was thinking maybe the 24-105 f4 L is the smarter play for the reach? But then Im worried about losing that stop of light for the landscape stuff. Im totally spinning here and need to buy something tonight so it ships in time. Does the 24-105 feel like a downgrade on such a high res sensor or is it the move?
imo the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM is the smarter move for Norway. On the R5, that f4 stop doesnt hurt as much because the sensor handles high ISO well and the IBIS is solid for handheld landscapes. You get more versatility with that extra reach on the long end tho. Its sharp enough for the high res sensor. Plus it stays well under your budget.
Unfortunately, Canon RF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM has disappointing corner softness at 45MP.

man that Norway trip is coming up fast! honestly id skip the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM if you are stressing about weather and sharpness. ive rented it before and unfortunately the corner softness at 45mp on the R5 drove me nuts for landscapes, plus build quality in damp weather left me kinda nervous. have you looked at the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD with an adapter? wait no, rf mount doesnt have third party standard zooms yet... my bad. look at a used Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM instead. you can usually find them right around your 2k budget if you hunt around local shops or used sites today. you get that extra stop of light for the fjords at dusk and the weather sealing is way more robust. whatever you do dont panic buy something thats gonna let you down in the rain over there!

Unfortunately, I had issues with that exact lens when I took it to a damp climate last fall. The weather sealing just wasn't as good as expected. Water seeped past the control ring during a light drizzle, and the lens electronics went haywire for three days. It totally ruined my shoot. Norway is wet. If you go that route, you seriously need to pack a rain cover. Don't trust the L badge blindly on this one, it's a huge risk if you only have one body and one lens.
