Need a lens for portraits on my R6 since Im shooting my sisters wedding in July. Budget is around 1k. Everyone keeps hyping the RF 85mm f2 but people complain about the slow AF, and I looked at the EF 85mm 1.4 L but is it worth using an adapter? Is there anything else that wont break the bank?

Regarding what #1 said, be careful. That lens can hunt in low light. Have you looked at the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R instead?

Honestly, grab the Canon RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM.

  • It is super sharp.
  • The AF is fine for portraits.
  • You save cash for the big day.

Late to the party, but in my experience shooting weddings on the R6, adapter reliability comes down to drive protocols. The EF variants with ring USM actually communicate remarkably well with the DIGIC X processor. Over the years, native glass has gotten all the hype, but legacy L-series optics still hold up mechanically under heavy workload.

  • Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM for extreme compression and micro-contrast, easily found used under Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM budget territory.
  • Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD since third-party VC stabilization pairs brilliantly with IBIS on the R6. I've tried many combinations over the years, and dual-axis stabilization redundancy saved my shots during evening receptions when light dropped off completely. Test your lens protocol before the actual ceremony date.

To add to the point above: skip the adapters. I grabbed a Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG HSM Art used and it works way better than expected for the price. Absolute steal.
