I finally pulled the trigger on the R5 Mark II pre-order because my old 5D was literally falling apart. Trying to figure out which zoom to pair it with for a big trip to Japan this October and I'm honestly torn. I've been looking at the RF 24-70mm f2.8 since everyone says its the gold standard but then I saw people raving about the 24-105mm f4 for the extra reach and weight savings. My budget is capped at about $2300 for the glass and I'm worried the f4 might waste that 45mp sensor in low light but the 2.8 is just so heavy to lug around Kyoto all day... is the 24-70 really worth the extra bulk for a general travel setup on this body?
In my experience, you should prioritize versatility for a trip like Japan. The extra reach on the long end is honestly indispensable for candid street shots.
- Choose the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM for weight and range.
- Trust the R5 II sensor to handle high ISO easily at f4. The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is superb, but it's just too heavy for a vacation lens.
