I just splurged on the R5 Mark II for my big trip to the Rockies next month but I honestly have no idea how to pick a lens. Everything looks so complicated with all the different numbers and I am totally lost. I just want something that gets the whole mountain in the shot... what's the best landscape lens for a beginner?

I usually suggest starting with something versatile like a zoom when youre just getting into it. When I first hiked the Tetons, I was constantly swapping lenses in the wind until I realized a reliable zoom is way safer for the sensor and just easier to manage.

  • Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: This is basically the safest choice. It gets wide enough for most vistas but lets you zoom in on distant peaks if you see something cool. Its very sharp and the weather sealing is a lifesaver if the mountain weather turns suddenly.
  • Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM: This one is better if you really want that massive, sweeping look. Its much wider, though it can be a bit trickier to use because it distorts things at the edges if you arent careful. Honestly, for a beginner, the 24-105mm is a solid bet since it covers so much ground without being too complicated for a first trip.
